Chocolate Modak


  • For The Outer Cover
  • 1 cup rice flour
  • 1 teaspoon oil
  • A pinch of salt
  • For The Inner Stuffing
  • 1/4 cup chocolate syrup
  • 1/2 cup grated chocolate
  • 3/4 cup desiccated coconut


  • In a pan, add one cup of water with salt and oil. Stir continuously while pouring the rice flour in a steady stream. No lumps should be formed. Pressure cook it till the steam begins to evaporate. 
  • Remove the lid, sprinkle some water and pressure cook it again till the steam begins to evaporate again.
  • Mix all the ingredients well and kneading the dough thoroughly using little oil till smooth. Divide the dough mixture into eight equal portions.
  • For the inner stuffing, mix together the remaining ingredients - grated chocolate, desiccated coconut and the chocolate syrup and divide this also into eight equal parts.
  • Grease your palms using little oil. Take a portion of the dough in your hand and flatten it into a round disc, further thinning the edges using your fingertips.
  • Fill one part of the coconut mixture in the centre, assemble the edges of the dough such that it forms tiny pleats. 
  • Press subtly, so that it resembles the shape of a cone.
  • Use a perforated plate to steam the modaks in a pressure cooker. Cover using a lid but do apply weight for ten to twelve minutes.
