What is Bulimia nervosa?

Bulimia nervosa (generally referred as bulimia) is an eating disorder which is characterized by a vicious cycle of binging on food and purging. An individual suffering from this illness often experience episodes of eating excess amounts of food followed by compensatory behaviour like misusing laxatives, vomiting or exercising to excess in order to prevent weight gain. This binge-and-purge cycle has a damaging effect on the digestive system and can result in life-threatening complications.

There is a general misconception that bulimia and other eating disorders are limited to negative body image and desire to be thin. But this is not the case. There are several psychological and cultural factors that play an important role in the development of these disorders:

  • Anxiety and stress
  • Depression
  • Societal pressure
  • History of abuse
  • Poor self-esteem
  • Genetics
