Challenges After Kidney Donation
Aug 2014
Dr D Satish
Sr. Consultant Nephrologist, Apollo Hospitals, Bangalore

The number of patients awaiting renal transplantation in India has steadily increased over time. Living donor kidney transplantation is the preferred treatment for end-stage renal disease (ESRD), because it is associated with improved graft and patient survival, as deceased kidney transplant program in India is still in its infancy.

Live kidney donation requires that healthy individuals voluntarily undergo major surgery with no physical health benefit to them, with also associated small inherent risks.

Checks to be performed prior to kidney donation

  • Blood typing and in some cases HLA typing
  • A detailed medical evaluation performed by the nephrologist to ensure
  • The potential donor is in good health
  • The donor has normal kidney function and structure
  • The recipient is at no risk with respect to transmission of viral or other infections
  • The donor will be at no obvious risk due to the donation
  • A psychosocial evaluation performed by a clinical social worker, psychologist, or psychiatrist to check whether the donor has been or is under the influence of any substance abuse like smoking, alcohol and drugs
