Emergency Care For Fractures

When pressure is applied to a bone, it may crack or break, this condition of the bone is called as a fracture. Skin may/may not break when a bone is fractured, bone fragments may/may not get displaced. Fractures could be of different types:

  • Open fracture (causes open wound in skin)
  • Closed fracture (doesn’t break skin)
  • Stress fracture (repeated stress causes hairline crack)
  • Complicated fracture (adjacent organs are damaged)
  • Greenstick fracture (happens in children due to fl exible bones)

How do I know if I have a fracture?
You will experience:

  • Crushing pain
  • Trouble moving
  • Bruising/swelling/ bleeding
  • Odd twist of limb/ deformity
  • Tenderness when pressure is applied
