52 year old Mrs. K consulted me for the treatment of warts on her face and hands. Ironically, she mentioned her battle with arthritis at a much later stage, only when I asked if she had any other health concerns. She then talked about the pain in her knee joints and lower back, though she had pain in most other joints too. She also complained of weakness and dull pain in her hands and arms. Occasional numbness of limbs was also present. The patient complained of restlessness of legs at night, which made it difficult for her to sleep. I could understand that it was a clear case of osteoarthritis (OA). Since she thought it was part of the ageing process and decided to live with it with the help of painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs, she didn’t find the need to discuss it with me.

Osteoarthritis is a disease of the joints. It is a form of arthritis that is progressive with age and is also known as degenerative arthritis. The primary cause for this condition is the loss and breakdown of cartilage of joints. Though there are more than 100 types of conditions related to arthritis, osteoarthritis is the most common. It was always thought that arthritis is the disease which occurs as a result of old age. However, many young people also suffer from this because of their unhealthy lifestyle.
